Aggregated data on financial and social performance from microfinance institutions in the developing world is used by MIX to monitor industry trends, create benchmarks and produce research analysis. The public data is also widely used by microfinance institutions, donors, investors, advisors, policy makers and other stakeholders in order to measure industry developments. MIX also produces non-public research in cooperation with its affiliates.
Managing a performance database and creating research analysis as well as benchmarks depends on appropriate internal systems and procedures. MIX is continuously working with its affiliates to examine the feasibility of data collection processes and data analysis. The relevant tools define the required data and use consistency checks to reduce potential errors. At the same time, MIX reviews potential errors in data and identifies and corrects these. A number of common analytical adjustments are then made to ensure comparable data across institutions.
Microfinance institutions operate in diverse environments and differ in their scope of operations and target markets. Historically, they face difficulties in isolating adequate and comparable benchmarks. The problem of data incomparability is addressed by MIX by utilizing the most complete source of financial information and social indicators in the microfinance industry. MIX applies a set of appropriate peer groups, adjusts data for comparability and, on the basis of this, offers reliable and relevant benchmarks to the microfinance industry.
